Municipal Elections

A general local election for the mayor and all councillors must be held every 3 years at the same time as elections for school board and regional district directors from electoral areas.

All eligible voters are qualified to be nominated for election except for judges, employees of the municipality (unless they take a formal leave of absence) and people who are disqualified for other specified reasons such as having voted as a councillor for an illegal activity.

To be eligible to vote, a person must be 18 years or older, a Canadian citizen, a resident who has lived in B.C. for at least six months and a resident of the City of Prince Rupert for the 30 days preceding registration. People who own property in the City but do not reside there, including representatives of property-owning personal corporations, may also vote if they meet the other age, citizenship and residency qualifications.
