Business Licenses

Applications

The City of Prince Rupert and District of Port Edward, require all persons to apply for a business license, before or at the time they start to carry on a business within the City. The City defines a business as “the carrying on of a commercial or industrial undertaking of any kind or nature or the providing of professional, personal or other services for the purpose of gain or profit.” Business License fees vary depending upon the type of business. These rates are assessed annually based on the calendar year of January to December.

Approval Process

Depending on the nature of the business approvals from the City Planner, the Fire Chief, the Building Inspector and the Medical Health Inspector may be required before a Business License can be granted.

Applications that conform to all requirements and do not need inspections can generally be completed in a matter of minutes. Applications that require inspections by other City Departments may take up to forty-eight (48) hours to be processed. Applications that do not conform to all the requirements cannot be processed until the requirements are met or the appropriate bylaws are amended, if City Council feels such amendments are in the best interest of the community.
